The Manual Calculation

To calculate your age in days by hand:

  1. Write down today's date in day/month/year format.
  2. Write down your date of birth.
  3. Count the total number of calendar days between the two dates β€” including leap years (366 days) where applicable.
  4. The result is your age in days.
Age in days = Total calendar days from date of birth to today

Example: Born on 15 March 1990, calculating on 28 June 2026.

Why Leap Years Matter for Age in Days

A regular year has 365 days. A leap year has 366. Leap years occur every 4 years β€” except for century years, which are only leap years if divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not.

For a 36-year-old born in 1990, there have been 9 leap years in their lifetime (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024). That adds 9 extra days compared to a simple calculation of 36 Γ— 365 = 13,140 days. The correct count is 13,149 days just from the birthday β€” plus days elapsed in the current year.

This is why manual calculation is error-prone. Our Age Calculator handles leap years automatically for any date of birth.

Age in Days for Specific Purposes

Medical and neonatal age

In medicine, a newborn's age is tracked in days for the first few weeks and then in weeks for the first two years. A "10-day-old" infant has very different developmental milestones from a "30-day-old." Neonatal intensive care units track age to the exact day β€” and sometimes to the hour.

Animal age in days

Veterinary medicine also tracks animal age in days, particularly for short-lived animals. A dog's age in days relative to a human year ratio varies by breed and size. The common "1 dog year = 7 human years" is a rough approximation β€” actual canine ageing is faster in early years and slower in later ones.

Legal age thresholds

In law, a person reaches a specific age on the anniversary of their birth date β€” not before. If you were born on 29 February (a leap day), in non-leap years you legally turn the relevant age on 28 February or 1 March depending on the jurisdiction. In most countries, it defaults to 28 February.

Age in Days FAQs

How many days old am I if I am 30?

A 30-year-old is approximately 10,957 days old, accounting for 7 or 8 leap years depending on their exact birth date. Use the Age Calculator for your precise count.

How many days old am I if I am 25?

A 25-year-old is approximately 9,131 days old (25 Γ— 365 + 6 leap years = 9,131 days). The exact figure depends on your birth date and whether any leap year birthdays fall within your lifespan so far.

What is the 10,000 day milestone?

10,000 days is a popular personal milestone β€” you reach it at approximately 27 years and 4 months of age. Some people celebrate it as an unofficial life checkpoint, roughly marking the transition from young adult to established adult.

How do I calculate my age in days without a calculator?

Multiply your completed years by 365, add 1 for each leap year that has passed since your birth, then add the days elapsed in your current age year. For a 30-year-old born mid-year 1996: 30 Γ— 365 = 10,950 + 8 leap years = 10,958 + days since last birthday.

Can I calculate my age in hours?

Yes β€” multiply your age in days by 24. A 30-year-old who is 10,957 days old has lived approximately 262,968 hours. Our Age Calculator displays this automatically alongside days, weeks, and months.
